Voxengo Boogex - User Testimonials
This thing is incredibly versatile and will go from transparent and super-clean to growly and snarly. I mostly use it as a bass amp sim, usually running the signal in parallel with a clean DI track. Sounds very "real" and snappy, gives life to the mids of the bass track like few other plugs will.
The included IRs are very handy too! The second one in, a beta52 4x12 impulse, is my go-to for quick and dirty bass sounds now. Sounds rich and smooth with just enough top end to pop through the mix without being too obtrusive.
The fact that this is free is hard to believe. Take my money!!!
Every guitar track I have used this plugin on sounds better than before. The presets are absolutely fantastic and yet they don't even begin to scratch the surface of the level of customization available to you. The fact that this is free absolutely staggers my imagination because as someone who exclusively uses free plugins this is the first I have ever downloaded and immediately looked for a donation button to express how insanely good and worthy it is.
If you play guitar you need to try this. You can enhance your clean tone, give the gift of crunch, overdrive a signal, tweak your EQ, and just make your signal sound more like you want.
This was one of my favorite free guitar amp sims in version 1. I wasn't too crazy about version 2, but Voxengo 3 is an awesome update of the original, excellent for any sound you can imagine in your head, endlessly tweakable on account of the parametric EQ tonestack that replaces the usual preset bass-mid-treble-presence layout. The sound engine is a major quality upgrade to an already great sounding amp sim, and the new dynacab feature, while a little confusing until you RTM, really adds depth to the speaker possibilities, including loading your own IRs.

Using Boogex plugin in Ableton Live with some additional fx like focusrite compressors in front and EQ + Comp. at the end of the chain, overdrive, dynamic tube in front and saturator and chorus (all ableton) behind Boogex, I found "my" sound now. Using the Live-crossfader availible in Boogex in the chain view (got to find a MIDI-joystick for it) i have many variations of my sound fading between the two amps and the amp delay. I set the drive in Boogex at about 10 to 11 o`clock, resulting in a very dynamic, finger-controlled overdrive that sounds like the best amps ever built in a single tool! I have used Amplitube 3 and Hendrix edition for over ten years. Boogex compares so good to that, I dont pay for updates no more. I am playing a 45 years old Ibanez with Gibson PAF and Dirty Finger.
By the way, Voxengo provides the only free plugin that works with Macbook Pro 2019 Catalina. From the Studio Nord Bremen I downloaded all the IR-files, they sound great!
Thanks very much VOXENGO!
Gotta tell ya--the Booger, er, Boogex came close to saving a session recently. I got some tracks to mix from a guy who had multiple-mic'ed his heavy guitar cabs, but all out-of-phase, and honesty not thick of beefy, and just plain fizzy. Yuck... after a couple of mix attempts with heavy EQ, I kind of gave up as 'good enough'. But, driving home while listening I got the idea of using the Boogex as a cab emulator on the rhythm tracks, and after only about 5 minutes of adjusting I had a huge tone going on, and one that really fit the style. I'm gonna put up a couple samples on my website ASAP just to demonstrate how cool the Boogex is in real-life situations like this!
Great stuff all-around, man--love it.
You guys are AWESOME and your plugs rock!
We here at Irie Lab Sound are all about helping starving artists turn out great demos (often for only pizza and beer). Thanks from me and from them and keep up the good work.
